The Malaysian racing calendar

When does racing happen in Malaysia, how often, and which are the days worth circling? A guide to the shape of the season — and where to find the exact, up-to-date fixtures.

The short version

The Malaysian racing season runs the full calendar year, January to December. Selangor stages roughly 40 race days a year, mostly on Saturdays (with some Sundays), and Perak adds its own meetings. For the exact dates of any given week, the official fixtures list is the source — this page explains the pattern so you know what to expect.

Unlike countries with a clear summer "flat season" and a winter "jumps season", Malaysia races all year round — the tropical climate means there's no off-season to speak of. That's good news for anyone wanting a day at the races: there's almost always a meeting coming up. But it also means the calendar is a rolling schedule rather than a fixed annual set of dates, so the key skill is understanding the rhythm of the season and knowing where to check the precise fixtures. Here's how it all fits together.

The shape of the season

A few simple facts define the Malaysian calendar:

  • It's a full calendar year. The season runs from 1 January to 31 December, with no extended break.
  • Around 40 race days a year are staged at Selangor's Sungai Besi (Serdang) racecourse — the busiest in the country.
  • Mostly Saturdays. Meetings are predominantly held on Saturdays, with some Sunday racing too. A "meeting" can run anywhere from a single day to several days within a month.
  • Two active clubs. With Penang now closed, the calendar is shared between Selangor and Perak, which coordinate their fixtures so they don't clash.

A typical month's rhythm

Within any month, the racing tends to follow a recognisable pattern — a mix of home meetings at Selangor, meetings hosted by Perak, and off-course betting on races simulcast from overseas. A representative shape looks something like this:

A representative monthIllustrative pattern
Sat
Selangor home meeting — a full local card, the centrepiece of most weekends.
Sat / Sun
Perak meeting in Ipoh, or a second Selangor day, depending on the month's schedule.
Wed
Midweek off-course betting on imported racing (Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa).
Varies
Feature-race meetings and multi-day carnivals at certain points in the year.

This is an illustrative rhythm, not a fixed schedule. Actual days vary month to month — always check the official fixtures.

The big races to circle

While most meetings are regular cards, certain days carry the season's showpiece races — the ones that draw the biggest crowds and the best horses. Worth looking out for:

The Triple Crown (Selangor)

Three Group 1 legs — the Tunku Gold Cup (1200m), Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) and Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m). The crown jewels of the local calendar.

Group 1

The Selangor Mile

A richer-than-ever feature introduced in 2025, run around mid-year, reflecting Selangor's push to raise its prize money and profile.

~July

Coronation Cup (Perak)

Perak's long-running feature race in Ipoh, a highlight of the northern club's calendar.

~Nov

Derby & carnival meetings

Multi-day meetings and Derby-themed cards appear at points through the year at both clubs — among the best days to attend.

Varies

Feature-race dates shift from year to year, so if you want to attend one of these, confirm the date on the official calendar well ahead — these are the days that draw the crowds.

For a first visit, any regular Saturday meeting is perfect and easy to attend. For an occasion, time it for a feature day — just book the date from the official fixtures, because they move year to year.

Finding the exact fixtures

Because the calendar is a rolling schedule that's subject to change, the only reliable source for precise upcoming dates is the official one. The Malayan Racing Association publishes the racing fixtures, and Selangor Turf Club lists its current race days and meeting programmes on its website, which is updated through the year. Always treat those as the final word over any list that might date — including this one. Fixtures are also noted as "subject to change", so it's worth a check close to the day.

A day out first, a bet second

The racing calendar is about a good day out as much as betting. If you do bet, set a budget in advance — see bankroll management. If it stops being fun, our responsible gambling guide and help resources are here.
